Go see The Hip

Capital Region folks looking for some fresh music to enjoy need to go to The Egg on Oct. 15 to see The Tragically Hip.

The Hip, as the group is fondly known in its native Canada, have been around for about 20 years, but only the true Hip lovers in this area have heard of them. They put on a kick-a$$ show, having played at Northern Lights in the past.

So while they play small venues here, they sell out places like the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Ryan’s been smokin’ something

I rarely watch "American Idol," but my wife had me check out a few minutes tonight. The host (his online biography is impressive) says that Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" is "the most popular song of all-time." At least he had the year (1975) correct.

What is this guy smoking behind stage? Whenever someone says "the most popular song of all-time," and we're talking rock music here, the first group that comes to mind is Led Zeppelin. "Stairway to Heaven" tops most Top 100 lists. The Rolling Stones sometimes get a nod. The Beatles. Jimi Hendrix. But Queen? One site lists "Killer Queen" ahead of "Bohemian Rhapsody".

VH1 puts the Queen song at #27. "Satisfaction" by the Stones is number one.

Rock-songs.com has "Stairway" at one and "Satisfaction" at two. "Rhapsody" is No. 4.

Don't get me wrong, it's a good song. It's just that I have never heard it referred to as "the most popular song of all-time." And this quote comes from a guy who's wearing a gray v-neck sweater under his gray, buttoned-down suit jacket. One more thing, Ryan. Either grow a beard or shave. You look like you need your mama to wash your face.
